The Adult Education Department
of First Coast Technical Institute
Overview:
The Adult Education Department of the First Coast Technical Institute has served thousands of people in the North Florida area for many years. We are extremely proud of the job we do and the people we serve. People come to us for a variety of educational needs, from the age of 16 on up, and we try to accommodate all of them. We offer a large variety of programs including: GED preparation classes, High School Completion for both co-enrolled high school students and adult students, English classes for Speakers of Other Languages, TABE Test remediation, and Adults with Disabilities programs. We operate a self-paced program where students are respected and encouraged to succeed. Our expert staff works with students individually to create an environment of success through a variety of methods, including the latest technology. Our students use our programs to earn a high school diploma, increase job skills, or both. Twice a year, we celebrate the success of our students with graduation ceremonies. Below are brief summaries of the programs we offer. If you have any further questions, please contact us either via email, at palmerd@fcti.org, or by phone, at 904-829-1021.
GED Preparation:
Free classes are offered to help students prepare for the GED examination. Students in this class work with a teacher to create an individualized learning path to best target areas needed to pass the GED examination. A wide variety of class times is available, including evenings to accommodate all types of students' schedules. Anyone interested in earning a high school diploma through the GED examination should contact our department for more information.
High School Completion:
High School Completion is a program designed for students to earn a standard high school diploma through completing the state of Florida graduation requirements, including the FCAT test and the twenty-four credits required by state law. Students in High School Completion may use this program as a full time high school, or they may come to us from another St. Johns County high school, as co-enrolled students for grade forgiveness or other credit earning needs.
English for Speakers of Other Languages:
The Adult Education Department also offers free English classes. These classes are geared toward those coming here from other countries who want to improve their English language skills for either professional or personal reasons. The ESOL classes provide education not only in proper English usage and pronunciation, but also vernacular and idioms necessary for fluency.
TABE Test Remediation:
In order to join most programs here at First Coast Technical Institute, one must first take the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE test); The assessment tool that measures reading, math and language skills that FCTI (and many other institutions) uses as a way to insure those in our programs have the necessary skills to complete their program. The TABE remediation program is designed to assist those who may not have reached those goals. In this program, the teacher creates an individualized learning path to target areas for improvement. When the teacher feels the student is ready, a re-test is given, and usually a celebration is in order!
Adults with Disabilities:
Our Adults with Disabilities program operates out of two off-campus facilities. In these facilities, students are referred to class to learn skills to help them better function in society. Students may learn everything from high-level math to less complex living skills. Both of these classes are operated jointly between the First Coast Technical Institute and the individual facility. For more information about this program, contact our department.
